THE HOLY GRAILS OF SNEAKERFREAKS

Sneaker Evolution is no ordinary exhibition. It's an ode to the sneaker: to its form, its function and the culture around it. From the very first techniques like vulcanisation to the newest innovations such as 3D printing. From sport to street and from hip-hop to high fashion. This expo shows how the sneaker evolved from functional sportswear into a cultural icon.

TL;DR:

  • The Sneaker Evolution expo at the Schoenenkwartier shows the journey of sneakers from sports shoe to cultural icon
  • Sneakerheads chose their holy grails: from the Air Jordan 3 to the Mizuno Wave Prophecy
  • Collabs with Martine Rose, Off-White and A Ma Maniere take classics to a new level
  • The exhibition runs until 6 April 2026 in Waalwijk
  • From retro nostalgia to futuristic innovation: every sneaker tells a story

During the opening we spoke to a number of real sneakerheads and asked them the question: what is your all-time favourite, your ultimate Holy Grail? The answers varied, but each one gave a glimpse into the soul of sneaker culture.

Which sneakers were chosen as holy grail?

Nike Shox x Martine Rose

The Nike Shox x Martine Rose collab was named for its daring silhouette and high-fashion look. Martine Rose transformed the classic Shox into a statement piece with an exaggerated shape and striking colours like metallic purple, blue, lime green and silver. The shoe balances between sport and avant-garde fashion, and symbolises how sneakers today aren't just worn, but also interpreted as a form of expression.

Air Jordan 3

The Air Jordan 3 was named more than once as a favourite, and rightly so. This model, designed by Tinker Hatfield and launched in 1988, marked a revolution in sneaker design. With the iconic elephant print, visible Air unit and the debut of the Jumpman logo, the Air Jordan 3 grew into a classic.

Over the years countless variations and collaborations have appeared, including the stylish A Ma Maniere collab, which brings together luxury and storytelling, and a long-awaited collaboration with Levi's that's expected anytime soon. The Air Jordan 3 remains relevant, timeless and beloved.

Air Jordan 5

The Air Jordan 5, launched in 1990 and also designed by Tinker Hatfield, is a sneaker that, like the Air Jordan 3, has earned its own iconic status. With striking details like the reflective tongue, transparent rubber sole and the netting side panels, the Air Jordan 5 radiates a tough, almost military vibe inspired by World War II fighter planes.

One of the most striking collaborations is the one with Off-White, under the direction of Virgil Abloh. This collab is hugely appreciated by sneaker fans and collectors worldwide and remains a highly coveted model.

Which underdogs stood out as holy grail?

Nike Footscape

The Nike Footscape is a sneaker that's certainly not for everyone, but that's precisely what makes it so special. With its asymmetric silhouette and uniquely woven upper, it immediately stands out among the more traditional models. The design combines comfort with a striking, almost futuristic look. While it might not be the mainstream favourite, the Footscape has a loyal following that appreciates exactly that quirkiness and innovation.

Nike Shox

Of course, the classic Nike Shox couldn't be missing. A shoe that effortlessly mixes street vibes with nostalgia. With the signature spring-like cushioning in the heel, the Shox radiates both performance and style and the model has earned an iconic status since its introduction. It's a sneaker that exudes power and energy and is still beloved by fans of retro and urban fashion.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy

It's a model that appeals to both runners and sneaker lovers who love high-tech performance with a striking look.

Frequently asked questions

What is a holy grail sneaker?

A holy grail is the ultimate dream pair for a sneakerhead. It's not necessarily about the most expensive or rarest shoe, but about the model that holds personal meaning. Nostalgia often plays a big role, think of the first sneaker you wanted as a kid or a collab you can never let go of.

Nike and Jordan have dominated sneaker culture for years, especially through iconic collabs and limited releases. But brands like New Balance, Asics and Mizuno are quickly gaining ground thanks to their mix of retro design and modern technology. The landscape is becoming ever more diverse.

How do you start collecting sneakers?

Start with what you genuinely love, not with what others are hyping. Follow releases via apps and sneaker blogs, and learn the difference between retros, collabs and general releases. You don't build a good collection in a week, but by being patient and developing your own taste.
